Io caterpillar eggs!  On three leaves. Some have already hatched!  these are those bright green stinging guys.  Crikey!  They're so small, I couldn't get the camera to focus on anything but the leaf. hopper guys [Jul. 25th, 2007|10:45 pm] [ Tags | hoppers ] [ mood | not like much ] the hoppers have been loving on the fig tree.  they love it so much, they're stripping it down.  do green grasshoppers turn into huge brown grasshoppers?  the little guy from before only has one back leg, but then today i noticed that one of the big guys also has only one back leg.  i wonder if it's the same little man?  i don't care too much about the fig tree cuz they're eating the leaves only and the tree has already set fruit (i've been picking one or two a day this  week). he looks so parched and aged! this hopper's not as innocent as he looks, believe me. one of the bigger guys holding on to my lime tree for life.  doesn't he look robotic? i'm worried the chrysalis is dead.  it looks pretty dead, huh? link 12 zulu coconuts|Leave a coconut

goldilocks strikes again [Jul. 21st, 2007|07:14 pm] [ Tags | dessert, hornworm ] [ mood | accomplished ] i went out back to pick a huge amount of jalapenos today, they're bright red and ready to go, and i've been putting it off.  i think there were about 35 or so from three plants i have together in a tire.  hark!  what do i spy? someone's been eating my jalapenos!  my very, very, very SHPICY jalapenos...  and someone's been shitting in my garden!  perfectly formed geometric shits, that is. and someone wants to sleep in my bed!  i'm sorry, you may not sleep in my bed, but you may have some candy.  would you like some candy, little girl? who knew that hornworm poo looked so much like cocoa puffs?  i knew they looked like bunny balls, and boba, but this coincidence is shocking... i made some square's for katrina's going away party, last night.  peanut butter cocoa puff squares, to be exact. i thought they might cut the roof of my mouth, but they didn't at all.  they had a nice peanut butter insulation thing going on. xo kittee link 20 zulu coconuts|Leave a coconut

it's a party, a party party weekend [Jul. 13th, 2007|10:17 am] [ Tags | bugs, garden ] [ mood | delighted ] it's a wonderful day.  i'm hanging out in my new amerikan apparel jogging shorts, chilling some carrot cake cookie dough in the fridge and contemplating a list of must do's today.  jeneluv from the post punk kitchen has kindly uploaded the full length movie, Earthlings, onto her myspace page.  You can see it here:   http://www.myspace.com/jeneluv --i think i can only watch this for five minutes at a time, so be careful.  i've heard it's very difficult to watch and impactful, too. i have been clamoring for a mallow plant for some time.  yes, i know that mallow is a big family of all kinds of plants, many of which I already have (hibiscus, confederate rose, althea, etc.), but still there is a plant down here that just goes by the name, "mallow."  i finally got my hands on it last weekend at the farmers' market.  it's gorgeous, and rubbery and makes huge, brilliant raspberry red flowers that are the size of dinner plates. i also got my hands on something that's known as a "blossoming maple."  i did some research and google has informed me that it is also known as an abutilon.  there's a big gallery of pictures you can see here:  http://www.malvaceae.info/Genera/Abutilon/galleryH.html  if you're interested.  here's one from my garden this morning, getting ready to open. oh?  how's the swallowtail chrysalis coming along?  since the chrysalis is pretty burried in a tomato vine, it's hard to get a decent shot.  this is from this morning: remember how green it was when it was first formed?  i need to figure out when the butterflies scheduled to emerge so i can get some photos. and speaking of my creoles, i have a couple of orange tomatoes that are plump and ripening.  for whatever reason, the leaffooters, seem to be staying away from this particular plant.  although i did notice another generation of fruit worms has come around. and one more shot, i worked for several hours on this side of the garden on tuesday: you can see the blossoming maple, the mallow, a peach angel's trumpet in the background (in the blue raised bed in the back) and in the left foreground, some chocolate soldiers under the camelis, which I adore. have a nice weekend, m'friends. xo kittee link 27 zulu coconuts|Leave a coconut

We decided to go to Lola's, which is this amazing Spanish restaurant here in NOLA. They have delicious food with lots of vegan options. Not only did we forget to bring ca$h (cash only joint), but just before we ordered dazee started to get a cluster headache. I could tell it was bad, and we had to jump up from the table, grab the wine which we'd just brought with us (and had been poured), and run for the car. I wondered if I should bring him to the hospital, since he made me pull off of Louisiana Avenue so he could retch in someone's flooded out yard. When I finally got him home, I was really starting to freak out--cluster headaches usually linger for about 6-8 weeks in our home, and they mark terrible and awful times. I stumbled with the keys and got inside, but noticed that the door hadn't been properly locked. So Weird. Then I heard a noise and got worried, i thought something/someone was in the house. I was really getting freaked out, and then all of the sudden, SO MANY OF MY FRIENDS were spilling out everywhere. SURPRISE! An instant party and NO CLUSTER HEADACHE!! Yay! We ate delicious food (Dave made his famous Roast Beef PoBoys, Nikkie made meat pies with a yogurt herb sauce, Andy made a noodle salad and Stephen made a grilled peach salad with caramelized onions and fresh blueberries!!!),we had TWO CAKES and then some of us stayed and danced to Leslie Hall and The Romanteeks until real late. It was great. We went outside and lit a few candles in the garden...The black n white evening shots with the lights are pretty surreal... THANKS, FRIENDS!! last days [Jul. 2nd, 2007|11:06 pm] [ mood | loved ] people at work have commented on my good moods lately. no wonder, eh? i was merrily doing the "i'm not your 'payroll and benefits specialist' no more" dance at work today. today was my last day in that horrid, immune system sucking role, and I am pleased. no one else seemed too pleased though, there seemed to be a lot of long faced faces there today. oh well! see ya!! i can't feel more than that just yet, because it doesn't seem real. i haven't really let it sink in yet, and i am only now beginning to really consider the possibilities. *do any of you subscribe to herbivore? it's a mostly online veg*n magazine that I have been contributing to for a few months now. i'm gonna get more involved with this, and hopefully we can make it into something really powerful. *zine. i have a zine in the works. not a cookbook. not a book. just a zine. *i want to get this mad house in order. *dazee got us tickets to india today. i 've actually been dragging my feet about this, but there you have it. it's gonna happen. i am not spending lots of time in mumbai. *what does a sharp and repeating shooting pain in my ankle mean? *JCC here i come. *i aimed Leslie Hall last night and she aimed back, "Hi!" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *RIP Bacon Sam. xo kittee link 10 zulu coconuts|Leave a coconut

awake [Jul. 2nd, 2007|12:00 am] sometimes i can't sleep on sunday night. tonight i laid in bed thinking about leaffooters, my job and it's last day, and stuff i am desperate to get done around the house. i also have tons of things to do and am traveling a lot this summer. i am determined to make a strawberry headed doll, i need to clean this house from top to bottom and and and. dinner was delicious tonight. i made refrigerator spring rolls, which tend to be whatever's lying around wrapped in a rice papper wrap and dunked in peanut sauce. tonight's were filled with mock seitan duck, fresh mint, fresh summer squash sliced thin on the mandoline, fresh basil, fresh shiitakes, and a little salad of shredded raw beet and carrot mixed with a bit of rice vinegar, salt and agave nectar. the peanut sauce kicked too: unsweetened pb mixed with warm water, hoison sauce, sriracha, nama shoyu and a tiny bit of salt--topped with roasted p-nuts. xo kittee link 6 zulu coconuts|Leave a coconut

condemnation, baby bugs, and health insurance [Jul. 1st, 2007|11:42 am] [ mood | curious ] yesterday, dazee and i were driving about--we were headed to Surreys for a little breakfast and we came upon a one way street that had three cones set up to prevent traffic from going through. well, cones like these are set up all over the city, and usually people put them down and never pick them up again. it's super common to just ignore them and precede along. so i told dazee, "it's new orleans, who gives a shit?" "just go through them." he thought that was pretty funny, funny enough for a t-shirt, although most folks outside of this town probably wouldn't get it. anyhow, when we were driving to another snack later that day, we drove past an apartment building that looked condemned. it was in really bad shape, windows boarded up, others smashed out, it looked like it had taken some water and perhaps had been closed up since the FLF. then we saw a young family come out and start strapping their little baby into a stroller. they were living there, and I was completely flabbergasted. that alone is saying alot, since folks live in all kinds of terrible places here and my flabbergasted filter is hard to trigger. dazee just says, "it's new orleans. who gives a shit?" can anyone help me identify these bug babies? i have a lot of them. i wonder if they're predatory bug eaters? i don't think they eat my plants... we saw michael moore's, Sicko, last night. has anyone else seen it yet? it made me so nervous considering tomorrow is my last day at work and i'm going COBRA on August 1. xo kittee link 24 zulu coconuts|Leave a coconut
